Austria – In a groundbreaking initiative, the Vienna School PPP Program is set to enhance educational infrastructure through the construction of nine school and kindergarten campuses in the Donaustadt area of Vienna. This public-private partnership (PPP) project, known as the Vienna School PPP Campus Berresgasse, is a key component of the broader Vienna “Campus plus” concept, emphasizing a modern and state-of-the-art pedagogical approach.

Scheduled to be operational from autumn 2019 onwards, the Vienna School PPP Campus Berresgasse is poised to contribute significantly to the city’s education sector. The initiative aims to create approximately 1,100 new school places catering to children aged between 0 and 14 years. The campus, spanning approximately 19,000 square meters, is strategically located in the northeast area of Vienna, designed to accommodate kindergarten, pre-primary, primary, and lower-secondary school education.

As part of the Vienna School PPP program, this project is a testament to the city’s commitment to education, with the overall program targeting the construction of 10 educational facilities from 2012 to 2023. The innovative “Campus plus” concept, employed in the construction of these facilities, integrates spaces for kindergarten and primary school, fostering parallel and shared learning processes.

The Vienna School PPP Campus Berresgasse, with an estimated cost of around EUR 46 million, reflects the city’s forward-thinking approach to education. The European Investment Bank has played a pivotal role in financing the project, providing approximately EUR 22 million.

The broader Vienna School PPP program, valued at around EUR 573 million, underscores the city’s commitment to investing in cutting-edge educational infrastructure. The European Investment Bank is set to contribute approximately EUR 69 million to the program, emphasizing the significance of public-private collaboration in advancing educational initiatives.

The procurement strategy for individual projects under the Vienna School PPP program follows a “Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintain” (DBFOM) model. This approach not only ensures the efficient construction of the facilities but also emphasizes the long-term sustainability and maintenance of the educational spaces.

With a focus on creating an environment conducive to holistic learning, the Vienna School PPP program aligns with modern educational trends. The integration of kindergarten and primary school spaces, as envisaged in the “Campus plus” concept, reflects a commitment to providing students with a seamless and enriching educational experience.

In conclusion, the Vienna School PPP Campus Berresgasse and the broader Vienna School PPP program exemplify the city’s dedication to fostering educational excellence through innovative infrastructure. The implementation of the “Campus plus” concept and the DBFOM model not only represent best practices in public-private collaboration but also signal a positive step towards shaping the future of education in Vienna.
