Canada- The Town of Essex is exploring a potential public-private partnership with Picklebarn Inc. to develop a state-of-the-art pickleball complex as part of the planned Essex Sports Park. The proposed facility would occupy eight acres of the 70-acre multi-use sports and recreation complex located at Batten Side Road and North Malden Road. This initiative aims to address the town’s shortage of recreational facilities and expand sports amenities for residents.
Essex recently issued a Request for Interest (RFI) to gauge private sector interest in utilizing a portion of the designated land. The broader vision for the Essex Sports Park includes baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and tennis courts. Mayor Sherry Bondy emphasized that the town faces a significant shortfall in sports facilities, and the few shared tennis-pickleball courts are overbooked, causing competition for court time among residents. The proposed partnership with Picklebarn represents an opportunity to enhance local amenities without placing the financial burden solely on taxpayers.
Picklebarn’s proposed complex would include 16 professional indoor pickleball courts, four padel courts, an indoor tennis court, a fitness center, a juice and coffee bar, and ten additional outdoor pickleball courts. The plan also features a bar and restaurant, making the venue a potential community hub. Officials hope construction can start later this year, with completion targeted for September or October 2025, pending necessary approvals.
Mayor Bondy highlighted that the revenue from selling the land to Picklebarn would significantly support the development of the sports park, helping to address the financial challenges that municipalities often face when balancing budgets for essential infrastructure like roads and bridges. The town plans a phased approach, with soccer fields expected to be ready by 2025, and is exploring additional funding options, such as grants and naming rights, to support further development.
Beyond meeting the town’s immediate recreational needs, the Picklebarn partnership promises broader economic benefits, including increased tax revenue and job creation. The complex is expected to draw visitors, boost local businesses, and contribute to a vibrant community atmosphere. While the partnership is still under review, town officials are optimistic about the potential benefits and are carefully evaluating the proposal to ensure it aligns with Essex’s long-term vision for the Sports Park.
